THE FINAL CONFERENCE OF PROJECT ERAIHM:
Great Conference-Hall of NASU, Kyiv (26 March, 2013)

The Final Conference of the FP7 project ERAIHM was held on March 26, 2013 in Kyiv. It was organized by the project consortium. The coordinating organization, Institute of Hydromechanics of NAS of Ukraine, was represented by its Director, Academician of NASU Victor Grinchenko and Project Coordinator, Corresponding Member of NASU Prof. Eugene Nikiforovich. From partner organizations the conference was attended by representatives of the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) - Director of the Energy Platform, Dr. Olga Kordas - and the Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) – Head of research Unit of Technology Dynamics and Sustainable Development, Prof. Karel Mulder and Professor of Public Policy, Martin de Jong. Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Science and Education Liliya Grynevych, Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of NASU Prof. Valery Heyets, Director of the National Information Centre (N²P Ukraine) Olena Koval, representatives of the Presidium of NASU and numerous academic institutions, professors and graduates of technical universities from Ukraine, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova, representatives of local authorities and business were also invited to take part in this event.

The final conference was to focus the attention of all participants to project objectives and team's achievements over the period of its implementation. This setting has become a leitmotif of the opening words of Academician Victor Grinchenko, President of ERAIHM Steering Committee. A detailed report on the progress of the project and its results was made by the Coordinator, Professor Eugene Nikiforovich. He spoke in detail about the long-term cooperation with our European partners, laying the foundation for ERAIHM success. The two-year consortium efforts has resulted in a number of international projects launched with the participation of IHM NASU in the areas of innovation, renewable energy, telemedicine. Through activities, the Institute has significantly increased its reputation among foreign research institutions and actually become an organic, actively functioning part of the European Research Area. In addition, emphasis was placed on educational and public components of the project to make the IHM NASU capable of providing an effective link between the professional research, innovation, community and business in Ukraine. Thus, one of the final stages of the project has become a just finished two-week Spring Ph.D. Course carried out by a consortium of ERAIHM together with the National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI. Its students were get acquainted with the novel concepts of Sustinable Development (SD), Constructive Technology Assessment (CTA), Functions of Innovation Systems (FIS) and methods of retrospective strategic planning, backcasting. A Vice-President of NASU, Director of the Institute of Economics of NASU, Academician Valery Heyets has described the global socio-economic challenges that humanity faces today. He cited some examples of actual problems which solution requires innovation, which could significantly mitigate or remove existing and emerging conflicts on the international stage.

Dr. Olga Kordas in her joint with the Vice-Major of Bila Tserkva Gennadiiy Dzhegur presentation, announced the construction of the long-term development scenario for municipal heating network of the city until 2025 This was the first example of socially-oriented backcasting application in Ukraine. For this purpose, the two creative workshops with the participation of all stakeholders involved in the provision, management and use of heating services have been conducted. On the basis of the analysis, not only the desired model of communal heating systems was selected, but also the necessary technical, cultural and institutional changes were defined. Prof. Karel Mulder told the audience about the concept of Sustainable Development, described the changing approaches to engineering education and practice, societal transformations necessary for the efficient perception of innovations by society. This presentation can be viewed here: [PDF]

After that, NPC Director Olena Koval informed the audience about the new European Framework Program "Horizon 2020" opportunities and conditions for the participation of Ukrainian participants in it. This presentation can be viewed here: [PDF]

The afternoon was dedicated to a discussion at the round table. The main issues discussed concerned the exchange of positive experience acquired by IHM with the agencies that are starting or planning to participate in the projects of the Seventh Framework Programme. The Academic Secretary of the Scientific and Organization Department of the Presidium of NASU Marina Gorokhovatskaya together with NIP Director Olena Koval have stressed the need for more extensive coverage of ERAIHM project, first of all, by the information media of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. President of the Corporation "European Energy Company" Petro Moroz shared his vision of ways to involve the Ukrainian business structures focused on producing of high-tech equipment to European research projects.
