Equilibrium stability of system of immiscible current-carrying fluids in magnetic field

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 8 (80) ¹ 4, (2006) p.3-14
Stability problems of equilibrium states of current-carrying liquids in interaction with external magnetic field are considered. The case of two-layer system of immiscible liquids that fills a rectangular cylindrical vessel in uniform magnetic field is studied in detail. It was shown that with increasing of magnetic field induction and/or electric current which pass through the MHD-system, the equilibrium state corresponding to the flat fluid interface becomes unstable. Such instability appears as arising of periodic waves on the interface. In linear theory the equilibrium stability problem is reduced to study of free oscillation frequency spectrum. Solving of corresponding spectral boundary problem is carried out numerically using Galerkin method. The boundary of stability region in the space of dimensionless parameters of the system is calculated. The influence of main parameters on stability threshold is clarified.
