We describe some results of our measurements of the Magnus force, acting on a rotating spherical body blown up by an air flow. A spherical body located on an analytical balance was rotated and blown by a flow with a given velocity. The out-of-balance caused by the Magnus force was measured, and the CM factor in the Rubinow-Keller formula was determined. The dependence of CM upon two Reynolds numbers Rew and Rep in a range 590<Rew<45000, 360<Rep<13500 was established. If Rep is fixed, the CM value decreases with increase in Rew. If Rew=const, CM increases with Rep, coming nearer to the value found Rubinow and Keller for small Rew. Using the obtained results and known data from the literature, we derive a generalizing formula for CM . |
