Biographical and bibliographical study of the scientific heritage of Ludwig Prandtl and his scientific school has been carried out. Prandtl, a prominent XX century personality, is an expert in fluid mechanics, author of the boundary layer theory (BLT) and of the first turbulence models. Authors' reflections on Prandtl's "thinking method" are given, in particular on combining experiment and mathematics in it, his vision of BLT role in modern hydromechanics, particularly in Ukrainian scientific school, is presented as well.
