Viscous entrainment of gas in a ventilated cavity of the prescribed shape

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 15 (87) ¹ 1, (2013) p.10-23
A mathematical model of gas loss in ventilated axisymmetric cavity of the specified shape is presented at small cavitation numbers on the basis of definition of characteristics of the laminar-turbulent boundary layer formed on the internal surface of the cavity. The Reynolds stress model of turbulence at arbitrary Reynolds numbers is applied to closure the system of Reynolds equations in the boundary layer approximation. On the basis of the determined characteristics of the laminar-turbulent boundary layer formed on the internal surface of the cavity, values of viscous gas loss are found. Integral estimations of the volume gas consumption in a ventilated cavity are proposed at different Reynolds numbers.
