Experimental research of drag and flow patterns of the rectangular cavity in a turbulent flow

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 14 (86) ¹ 4, (2012) p.3-25
The results of measuring the hydrodynamic drag force of rectangular cavities are presented. Tests were done in a hydrodynamic pipe where the model of wing of small lengthening was installed, which flat bottom surface was oriented in parallel to the mean flow. The cavities with varied length-to-width ratios were mounted on that surface. The drag force of a cavity means the difference between the drag of the model with a cavity and the drag of the model without a cavity. The findings are presented as the dependences of the cavity drag coefficient versus the Reynolds number and the length-to-width ratio of the cavity. The flow visualization patterns inside cavities and their neighborhoods are showed. A connection between the flow inside a cavity and behavior of the drag coefficients is analyzed.
