Description of the Langmuir circulations by the ordered set of convective bicubic cells

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 14 (86) ¹ 2, (2012) p.29-40
A theoretic model is proposed for description of the Langmuir circulations (LC) by the ordered set of convention cubical cells with free boundaries. It is shown that the flows typical of LC can be formed by the corresponding arranging of the convection cubic cells. The theoretical model is compared with the experimental data. The explanation of the LC peculiarities is offered. In particular, the reason for difference between the velocities of descending and ascending flows of LC in the direction transverse to the wind speed is clarified. Due to mentioned difference, the shift of centers of the adjacent counter rolls to the descending flow is shown. The estimation of threshold wind speed is given, which excess results in forming of the LC. The invariance of LC formation depending upon the way of liquid heating is substantiated on the basis of symmetry properties of the initial system of linear equations. A non-symmetric distribution of flow velocity of liquid surface layer in the LC in transverse to the wind speed direction is described. It is shown that wind-streaks orientation relatively to wind direction is caused by the effect of the Coriolis force.
