The interaction of internal solitary waves in the head-on collision

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 13 (85) ¹ 4, (2011) p.68-77
The dynamics and energy transformation of internal solitary waves of large amplitude, propagating in a fluid with two-layer stratification are investigated numerically. Calculations are performed in frame of the Navier-Stokes equations in the Boussinesq approximation using non-hydrostatic model. It is shown that the interaction of large-amplitude waves leads to shear instability and the formation of Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices in the layer section.
