Shape peculiarities of the base artificial axisymmetric cavities

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 13 (85) ¹ 3, (2011) p.69-75
The influence of the gas ventilation on the shape of base slender axisymmetric steady cavities is considered. The differential equation for the approach of one-dimensional inviscid flow of incompressible gas in the narrow channel between the cavity surface and the cylindrical body was used for calculations. The analysis of the solutions for cases of zero and negative values of the derivative of the cavitator radius at the cross section of the cavity origin is presented. It was shown that ventilation can sufficiently decrease the base cavity length. Presented theoretical results allow explaining the experimental facts of both a weak dependence of the cavity length on ventilation and its abrupt increase. As well the hysteresis behaviour of the cavity length with the change of the ventilation rate can be explained.
