Inertially-vortex principle of generating forces at insect wings

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 13 (85) ¹ 1, (2011) p.61-76
The principle of creation of the lift arising on wings of insect was investigated. The improved method of discrete vortices (IMDV) generalized for a viscous vortical medium and also a method of calculation of a non-steady field of pressure (generalized formula Cauchy-Lagrange for a viscous vertical medium) to numerical modeling process of fling (the main phase of Weis-Fogh mechanism) are applied. For cases of instant and smooth start of wings at Reynolds number equal 102 and 106, for finding the contribution of forces of the various nature in formation of the main vector of external forces on wings, the special researches are carried out. It was revealed that at decreasing of Reynolds number the contribution of forces of the inertial nature grows, the contribution of forces of the vertical nature decreases, however in case of instant start of wings it can constitute two thirds of all normal force in the end of fling. On the contrary, inertial forces dominate over smooth start, and their contribution makes 70%-80% in the end of fling. The contribution of forces of the circulating nature is small in all cases.
