The preservation effect of a fluid mirror in a moving sphere

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 13 (85) ¹ 1, (2011) p.24-28
The concept of "a fluid mirror" known from hydrostatics is extended to the case when fluid partially fills a moving spherical container. The preservation effect of a fluid mirror in a moving sphere is a frequently observed phenomenon when (1) the flat configuration and (2) the orientation in the absolute space of the fluid free surface remain invariable all the time. In the present work, this effect is analytically described within the limits of a model of an ideal incompressible homogeneous fluid. Regimes of sphere motions under which this preservation effect actually occurs are specified. The exact formulas defining orientation of the mirror with respect to the sphere and depending on both the acceleration of the sphere center and the angular sphere coordinates are obtained.
