Methods of generation of internal waves in laboratory conditions are considered. The emphasis is on internal solitary waves propagating along the interface in two-layer medium. The modified Óstep pool methodÔ has been used to carry out experimental investigations of characteristics of internal solitary waves. The experimental facility and methodology of experiments are described. It is shown that KdV theory can be used successfully to obtain the characteristics of internal solitary waves of small amplitude. Fully non-linear theories are used to describe waves of large amplitude, and EKdV theory can be applied as alternative theory. |
