Interactions of two square cylinders in tandem

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 10 (82) ¹ 2, (2008) p.36-47
A coupled Larangian-Eulerian numerical scheme, in which Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the vorticity-velocity formulation, is developed for calculation of flow in a multiply-connected domain. It is used for modeling the laminar flow past two square cylinders in tandem. Results show that evolution of the flow and hydrodynamic loads on the bodies depend on the flow pattern in the region between the cylinders. Depending on the spacing between the bodies it may be symmetrical, when a stable vortex pare is there formed; non-symmetrical, with separation of large vortices from the front cylinder; and bifurcational, when a sudden jump from one flow regime to another is possible. Special attention is paid to the effect of external disturbances on flow evolution.
