Application of TVD-schemes for approximation of momentum transfer in geophysical models of hydromechanics with spaced grids

Scheme of central differences, which is often used for numerical approximation of the advection terms in the momentum equations in geophysical hydrodynamics models with staggered grids, can induce non-physical oscillations of the velocity field and cause numerical instabilities. This paper proposes a numerical method for momentum advection approximation, which is based on the specific interpolation of the velocity field with subsequent application of any scheme for a scalar transport equation, including TVD schemes. This method is studied in the application to the problems of flow modeling in the water reservoirs with free surface.
