Numerical simulation of the influence of free-stream turbulence on boundary layer structure

Applied hydromechanics, Vol. 10 (82) ¹ 1, (2008) p.46-57
The turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate under influence of free-stream turbulence is simulated by LES-technique for a Reynolds number of 104.The large-scale flow field has been obtained by directly integrating the filtered three-dimensional time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using a finite-difference method. The small-scale motions were parametrized by dynamic subgrid-scale mixed model. The number of grid points used in the numerical method was {385 ? 193 ? 97}. The simulation were performed to study the mean velocity, the turbulent stresses, the turbulence kinetic energy and subgrid-scale-model effects with turbulence intensities Tu= {0; 0.0287; 0.0466; 0.0754}. The free-stream turbulence increases the skin friction and considerably changes mean and fluctuating velocites in the outer region of the boundary layer. There is good agreement between the computer mean-velocity profiles, turbulence statistics and experimental data.
