Choice of location of a underwater remotely operated vehicle for calculations of hydrodynamic resistance of an umbilical cable

On the basis of the equations of a statics of a flexible line in a homogeneous flow the optimization task about a choice of an unfavorable mutual positioning of the underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and parent vessel is considered at definition of a tension of a umbilical cable, connecting them. The analytical solution of this task is given for a general case of a flexible line in a inhomogeneous flow, and also results of numerical modeling of some special cases allowing to simplify the solution for practical use in design calculations.
