Effect of physiological features of upper airways on the respiratory sounds characteristics

Acoustic bulletin, Vol. 1 ¹ 3, (1998) p.14-23
The paper deals with discussing of some physiological properties of human respiratory tract important for forming of adequate imagination about sources of the respiratory sounds. Knowledge of the features peculiar to noise generation process is necessary for creation of the efficient computer systems for their recording and processing intended to improve the techniques for diagnosing of respiratory diseases. Since the respiratory sounds substantially depend on many parameters, all of them should be documented within the course of measurements. An air volume rate measured by a pneumotahograph is one of most frequently recorded parameters. As it follows from the results of measured scatter of glottis sizes and that of the respiratory sound power spectral density levels, maintenance of the constant volume rate controlled by the pneumotahograph does not guarantee obtaining of the similar levels of respiratory sounds generated by air flow in the trachea.
